Rockhampton story

Rockampton story

Friday 20 February 2015 is a day residents of south east Queensland will never forget. In the early hours, category 5 Cyclone Marcia made landfall, tearing through various areas including Rockhampton, leaving the town flattened. Marcia was only the fifth category 5 Cyclone in history to hit Queensland, the highest classification given by the Bureau of Meteorology.

In the aftermath of Cyclone Marcia, the gravity of the storm began to hit home for Queensland communities. Trees that once stood straight were stripped of their branches, lying flat on the ground, some were snapped in two or completely uprooted. Debris was scattered all over Rockhampton, traffic lights were out and signs were either bent or nowhere to be seen. Over 60,000 homes were left without power in Queensland, some having had their roofs blown off and walls torn down.

The damage to Queensland totalled over $750 million, with over 11,250 claims lodged in the first five days after the catastrophe. The number of claims would leave insurers and Queensland-based brokers struggling to settle all their customers’ claims in a timely fashion.

One of the brokers affected was QBE Partner, Rockhampton-based Regional Insurance Brokers (RIB). Adding to the strain RIB experienced when Marcia struck, was they were still managing claims from the Queensland hail storm which had occurred just three months prior. With this further influx of claims, Leigh Stalker (Regional Manager Queensland, QBE Australia) knew RIB was going to need some assistance from QBE to manage their customers’ needs.

With this in mind, Leigh made a phone call to Darren Green (Director RIB, Central Queensland), who confirmed the magnitude of the situation. Leigh proposed a unique plan he and David Kneipp (Distribution Manager – Claims, QBE Australia) had developed for RIB to help streamline their claims process. Darren agreed the proposal would make their job a lot easier and the solution was put in place just hours later. Watch the video to find out what our partnership made possible.
