Melanie Raumer - Graduate, Claims
"At QBE, you never know what kind of opportunities are going to present themselves. You never know what you might find an interest in.
I've met graduates who have gone from doing underwriting to marketing, which is an impressive jump. Working in a large company like QBE and having those sorts of opportunities available is exciting.
For me, being an economics student, the insurance industry appealed to me due to the variety of roles. The idea of being able to travel and experience living overseas was also very attractive.
I started in the Graduate Program, which takes 18 months to do. You're placed on a series of rotations through various teams, which allows you to gain a lot of different experience. In a previous rotation I was doing a lot of project work. In another rotation I worked in the Professional Indemnity claims team where we worked mainly on property management and insurance.
You have a lot of responsibility, more than I thought you'd receive as a graduate. As part of the Graduate Program we have the opportunity to participate in a secondment through the QBE Foundation's partnership with Jawun. During the secondment we work closely with Indigenous communities. This is exciting because we get to share our skills and expertise, whilst learning about Indigenous culture and history.
I now have a lot more responsibilities than I thought I would, especially working in Claims. I never anticipated I'd learn so much. In my role you learn a lot about biology with personal injury claims, engineering when you're reading reports about damaged buildings. I didn't anticipate that would happen and it's quite fascinating. No two claims are the same. You're constantly learning new things."
