Workers Compensation Insurance

Your employer's responsibilities

Your employer is required to take out a WorkCover policy if:

  • the annual total remuneration they pay as an employer per financial year (including superannuation) is likely to exceed $7,500; or
  • if they pay remuneration below $7,500 but employ an apprentice under an approved government scheme; or
  • if they pay remuneration below $7,500 and an employee lodges a WorkCover claim.

If your employer fits any of the above criteria and does not take out a policy, penalties could apply, plus reimbursement of any claim costs, and 200% penalty of each year's premium.

Employers who are unclear about their requirements for a workers compensation insurance policy, including their other rights and responsibilities, can contact us on 1300 550 672 or visit WorkSafe Victoria.

Additional information on worker rights and responsibilities is also available from Worksafe Victoria.
